It started with the death of a man in London at the hands of the police, the circumstances and justification of which have been called into question. It reminds me of the penultimate scene in “V for Vendetta,” where Inspector Finch supposes that the chaos will be set into motion by an act of unnecessary violence. Oddly enough, among the soundbites interspersed throughout his speech, one comments that “rioters were arrested in Brixton,” which has in fact been the location of some of the rioting.

While the current Conservative government in England is certainly little-loved, I don’t think the current strife is because of totalitarian rule. Its not really even related to the shooting of Mark Duggan. Its because my generation is starting to see the the bright future we were promised as children isn’t going to come true. Its because we’ll be the first generation since the Industrial Revolution to have it worse off than our parents. Its because the best outcome is that our children can still have it better than us, but we’ve been brought up too spoiled to care about that. After considering it, I’m not really sure which dystopia I prefer.

"80% of everything that has been built in North America was built in the last fifty years and most of..."

““80% of everything that has been built in North America was built in the last fifty years and most of it is brutal, depressing, ugly, unhealthy and spiritually degrading.””

- James Howard Kunstler (via joelx3)

Raising the debt ceiling was an unexciting, routine vote for...

Raising the debt ceiling was an unexciting, routine vote for Congress the first 129 times it happened after WWII. I gave myself a few weeks to come up with a more focused approach, and in the end I’ve got an idea that intrigues me enough to give it a try.

One of my strengths has always been finding simple ways to break down more complex problems. At times I feel hokey relying on metaphor and simile so heavily, but it works. Oddly enough, the one field I have a difficult time summing up quite so succinctly is one where I have a fair amount of knowledge: politics. Its hard to break down the layers of these issues in a simple “its like” statement, at least not in a way that does justice to the complexity. There needs to be depth, and that’s why I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about art in various media as an extended metaphor of sorts. Lyrics as a touchstone to current debates, cartoons delivering information layered with commentary, etc.

I’m still probably going to post captioned photos of Jesus on the turntables and Avi’s sweet slams, but at least I’ve got an idea of where I’m going and what I’m doing. I need something to separate me from the Republican Party.

"Reality has a liberal bias."

“Reality has a liberal bias.”

- Me, after reading one too many letters from assholes to my local paper.

In the end, you always end up getting flushed into the sewer.

In the end, you always end up getting flushed into the sewer.

thedailybeard:

This American Life

A professor in Pennsylvania makes a calculation, to discover that his state is sitting atop a massive reserve of natural gas—enough to revolutionize how America gets its energy. But another professor in Pennsylvania does a different calculation and reaches a troubling conclusion: that getting natural gas out of the ground poses a risk to public health. Two men, two calculations, and two very different consequences.
